Unit 1: Exploring Identity

Description: In this first unit, students will explore the power of the written word to persuade others. Beginning by exploring their own identity both as people and as writers, students will develop their skills in writing an argument to persuade.

Pre-Assessment Questions: You may choose to give students this prompt before beginning this unit or substitute it for a “do now”/ Bell-Ringer activity at the beginning of the unit to get students thinking about the objective of this curriculum: using writing to persuade.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Why do powerful people use writing and speaking as tools for change?
  2. How do writers persuade/move their audience?
